The Body Shop: Figure Drawing and the Mechanics of the Human Form

In-Person Workshop | Available

You don't have to learn everything there is to know about human anatomy in order to get better figure drawings. Join us for five days where we learn the crucial information needed to draw accurate figures, and the important anatomical information to give our drawings structure.

Day 1 and 2 will consist of rendering a figure in graphite, teaching students how to use comparative measurement to capture proportion and build form. Day 3, 4 and 5 will consist of drawing two figures of the same pose, from life, one a skeleton, the other a figure showing the muscles. By the end of the workshop, the goal is for students to have a completely rendered figure, a skeleton, and a figure with muscles. Students can also expect to have an understanding of comparative measurement, a step wise approach to breaking down and rendering a figure, and how to give a figure structure; Understanding skeletal proportion, bone influence on surface form, bony landmarks, muscle shapes and form, contour changes, and more.

John’s method includes individual critiques, lectures, and drawing demos.

Dates: Aug 19th - Aug 23rd (5 days)

Time: 9:30 to 4:30 (1 hr lunch)

Asimacopoulos, John
John Asimacopoulos

John Asimacopoulos started as a student at the Academy of Realist Art Boston in September 2015, after making the decision to switch from a medical career to pursue an artistic one. His studies did not go to waste though, as they gave him knowledge, and appreciation of the human body, especially through his study of anatomy, which included dissection. John applied what he learned, and started teaching artistic anatomy, and figure drawing at the school in 2018. He graduated from the school in 2021.

He has won numerous awards, including two Art Renewal Center scholarships in 2017, and 2019, the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund in 2017, the Head Start Student Competition in 2017, and second place in the Richeson Still Life & Floral Competition in 2021. He has been involved in group shows at Bowersock Gallery in Provincetown, and the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center. He has also juried for the 3rd Annual Northeast Fine Arts Exhibition in 2021.

He is currently working on a series of narrative paintings exploring the theme of transformation.
