Intro to Artistic Anatomy

Evening Class | Available

Why should an artist study anatomy? Can't we just draw what we see? With something as complicated as the figure, knowledge of anatomy gives the artist an additional lens through which to look at the figure. This evening class tackles the basics of artistic anatomy, covering the skeleton and muscle. We’ll address proportion, movement, bony landmarks and muscle groups, with a constant emphasis on how the bones and muscles relate and appear on the surface.

Each week will consist of a lecture followed by drawing exercises to solidify ideas. Drawing exercises will include sketching, as well as layover exercises where bones and muscles are drawn over figure reference. The final exercise of the class will be a full rendition of a skeleton and muscles  of a specific figure pose.

By the end of the class, students can expect to have an understanding of all of the bones, and a general understanding of the muscles of the body, being able to navigate what they see when looking at a figure, as well as also improving their conceptual thinking for when they are working from their head.

Tuesdays, Apr 7th- June 23rd

Time: 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Asimacopoulos, John
John Asimacopoulos

John Asimacopoulos started as a student at the Academy of Realist Art Boston in September 2015, after making the decision to switch from a medical career to pursue an artistic one. His studies did not go to waste though, as they gave him knowledge, and appreciation of the human body, especially through his study of anatomy, which included dissection. John applied what he learned, and started teaching artistic anatomy, and figure drawing at the school in 2018. He graduated from the school in 2021.

He has won numerous awards, including two Art Renewal Center scholarships in 2017, and 2019, the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund in 2017, the Head Start Student Competition in 2017, and second place in the Richeson Still Life & Floral Competition in 2021. He has been involved in group shows at Bowersock Gallery in Provincetown, and the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center. He has also juried for the 3rd Annual Northeast Fine Arts Exhibition in 2021.

He is currently working on a series of narrative paintings exploring the theme of transformation.
