Continuing Landscape Painting in Watercolor

Join instructor Corry Buckwalter to explore painting a landscape topic of your interest in a creating a series of thematically connected paintings. Developing a series of work is an excellent way to improve watercolor painting skills, stay motivated in one’s creative process and delve deeper into a topic that one is curious about. With Corry’s guidance, students will explore a landscape topic of personal meaning and create a portfolio of several interrelated paintings over the 8 week session. Corry will teach processes to create cohesive themes for a series of paintings. Topics might include: studies of fields of native plants, seasonal changes in a local garden, changing urban neighborhoods, discoveries from a favorite daily walk over time or documenting a specific forest that fascinates the artist, among others. A variety of painting styles will be studied with inspirations from master watercolor artists such as John Singer Sargent, Mignonette Yin Cheng, and others. In each class session Corry will demonstrate watercolor skills appropriate for all topics, as well as, one-on-one discussions to analyze and explore student reference photos and other source materials. This class offers a supportive community of artists who can share ideas, learn from each other and explore their interests together. Open to continuing students or those with previous watercolor experience.

- -Arches watercolor paper, size 22 x 30 inches, 140 lb, 2 sheets
-Pad of inexpensive Canson cold press watercolor paper, 9 x 12 inches, 140 lb, for experimenting with ideas and testing color mixes
-Inexpensive bound sketch pad, 8” x 10” or 9” x 12”
-H, HB and 2B graphite pencils
-Vine charcoal for sketching
-Kneaded and plastic erasers
-Masking tape, light colored or clips
-Board or surface to tape or clip paper onto
-Professional-quality tubes of watercolor paint from the Winsor & Newton brand. Suggested warm and cool colors that mix nicely for landscapes OR use what professional grade paints you already have:

4. Permanent Rose
5. French Ultramarine
6. Cobalt Blue
7. Winsor Blue (Green or Red Shade)
8. Winsor Violet (Dioxazine)
9. Winsor Green (Blue Shade)
10. Sepia or Burnt Umber
-Two containers for holding water
-Paper towels or clean rags
-Palette to hold each color separately, preferably with a cover to save paint over time
-Palette to mix colors, such as a large porcelain plate or enamel preferred over plastic
-Synthetic rounds brushes, sizes #4, #8, #16 (or #18), plus one flat brush ¾ inch or 1 inch OR use what you already have.
Corry Buckwalter
Corry Buckwalter is a visual artist, educator and landscape designer based in Arlington. Her artwork explores ecology, land use and botanical history. In the studio classroom, Corry nurtures individual student creativity through inclusive and supportive instruction. Her belief that art making is a catalyst for personal growth and community-building has grown from her extensive experience teaching adult learners of all abilities.
