Pastel Drawing & Painting
In-Person: Adult | Registration opens 2/5/2025 10:00 AM
Pastel drawing or painting has an inherent visual softness. You will explore that aspect of using pastels as well as other techniques. For example, one technique is to create form such as a tree trunk using contrasting values. Another technique is layering and using a fixative. This is a method used to create different colors. You will also organize color with the use a color wheel while creating a still life. Through these and other techniques, you will fashion a fabulous landscape or an intimate still life. We will discuss the use of colored papers and pastel paper, which is like extremely fine sandpaper. This course is designed for the beginner through intermediate. The class will be divided into group work and individual work. You will work from photographs and actual still life objects.

MISCELLANEOUS- A firm support that is larger than the paper
- Masking tape to secure the paper
- Kneaded eraser
- Tortillons (stumps) and/or cotton swabs
- One or two rags
- Latex gloves if you would like to keep your hands clean
EXTRAS- You can use a strip of corrugated cardboard as a way to organize your sticks in a box.
- Make a chart with a few marks of each color and its name. As you run out, you can refer to the chart to buy the exact same color without any guesswork.
- If the sticks get coated with other colors, place the sticks in a container filled with either ground rice, semolina or cornmeal. Put the lid on and shake it gently. Sift out the material from the sticks and the sticks will be clean.
