Gelatin Plate Printmaking ( in person)

Adult (Ages 16+) | This program is completed

Learn to make interesting prints using a gelatin plate! Explore this planographic printing process from scratch to create gelatin plate prints on paper without the use of a press. Gelli Plates and water based screen printing inks will be used. This class will explore techniques to reveal unique details in a fun, approachable setting. No printmaking or art-making experience is required!

    FOR THE FIRST CLASS
    •Wear old clothes and/or bring an apron
    • Cover a 9” x 12” cardboard with aluminum foil (to hold your gelatin plate)

    PAPER
    • one 9” x 12” pad of white drawing paper to make test prints
    • freezer paper (for palettes)
    • 8 ½” x 11” white card stock (for prints and for making stencils)
    • Other interesting inexpensive printmaking papers are: wrapping papers, pages from a discarded book or telephone book, or pages from good quality magazines

    ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES
    • water based screenprinting ink is recommended: Jacquard, Speedball are two brands, 4 oz jars of red, yellow, blue, black and white
    • brayer – 6” soft rubber brayer is preferable, available at Playtime, Dick Blick etc.
    • paint brushes (either oil or watercolor are OK)
    • dishpan or bucket for water, rubber gloves (optional)
    • old towel or rag (or roll of paper towels)
    • 3”x5” sponge (old one OK) for cleaning plate
    • small plastic cups or yoghurt containers
    •palette knife or small plastic knife for mixing inks
    • plastic spoons
    • pencils
    •X-acto knife or scissors
    •masking tape

    BEGIN COLLECTING THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS FOR CLASS
    any texture/pattern-producing materials:plant materials: leaves, grasses paper or fabric with texture: burlap, cheesecloth, paper towels, tissues, doilies or laces, rubber or wooden stamps, combs (no sharp points), plastic silverware, spools, corks, yarn, adhesive spreaders ($1.00 at the hardware store), commercial stencils, an old magazine, any other materials with texture that you can think of (no sharp edges/points)
Nancy Crasco

A BFA graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Nancy Crasco earned a Master’s degree at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA and has been working in fiber since 1968, actively exhibiting her work nationally and internationally since 1975. Her work is often based on the intricacies of nature, using imagery attained through the use of various printing processes, including linoleum, gelatin plate, and a photocopier, in combination with stitching and embroidery. Nancy has extensive teaching experience in both public and private education, and offers workshops in both fiber and printmaking, and lectures about her work to various groups interested in fiber art processes. She is a member of the Cambridge Art Association, Studio Art Quilters Association and the Surface Design Association.
