Learning to Notice the World: Using the Five Senses (In-Person)

Adult (Ages 16+) | This program is completed

Let’s explore our senses to create better images in poetry and prose! Exercises will include using synesthesia (using words that normally convey one sense to convey another): remembering specific smells and creating interesting similes for them; recalling a place in childhood using all five senses; exploring the possible dimensions of touch (pain, temperature, texture (roughness, smoothness, dryness, wetness, sharpness, dullness, oiliness); visceral sensations (in the breathing apparatus, in the larynx, the esophagus, the stomach, the intestines); and using taste in poetry and storytelling.

We will look at excerpts from James Agee’s writing, including the prose poem, "Knoxville Summer of 1915” (from the book A Death in the Family) and Let Us Now Praise Famous Men; the prose of Toni Morrison and Harper Lee; the poetry of Sylvia Plath; the poetry of Pablo Neruda, the poetry of Thomas McGrath; poems by the 14th century Welsh poet Dafydd ap Gwilym, the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks, and more.

  • COVID Requirements

Based on current guidance from the Arlington Department of Health, CDC, and other local and national public health agencies, Arlington Center for the Arts (ACA) will no longer require proof of COVID vaccinations for participation in our programs, including classes, camps, exhibits, performances, and events. While masks continue to be optional at ACA, they are strongly recommended, and we encourage everyone to review current masking recommendations from the CDC to inform their personal choices.

ACA is aware that public health guidance re: COVID-19 continues to change and evolve – all current policies are subject to change, in order to best align with current guidance and to preserve the safety of all of our constituents. Please be on the lookout for updated policies and protocols moving forward.
