The Lives & Music of Weick, Schumann, & Brahms
Adult (Ages 16+) | This program is completed
During the 19th century, music was an integral part of people's everyday lives. Among the towering artists who provided the musical backdrop of this time period were Clara Wieck, Robert Schumann, and Johannes Brahms. Their lives were to become intimately intertwined and much of their music, invented by the acerbic Brahms and the manic-depressive Schumann became recognized all over Europe, spread by the prodigious talent of pianist Clara Wieck, whose own compositions remained virtually unknown during her lifetime. In this four-week study, we shall explore the music of these three artists and examine their lives, all linked in a kind of emotional symbiosis. Although the primary focus of our study will be the piano music of the three, we shall examine portions of Brahms's "A German Requiem" and the lieder and chamber music of the Schumanns. This class is intended for any music lover, especially for those who find 19th century Romantic music appealing. Students do not need a musical background to understand the concepts and enjoy this class. Students will also get to attend a live musical performance at the end of class- ticket is included in price.

Dotty Burstein
she/her/hers
Dotty Burstein has had a lifelong interest in the intersection of composers' lives and their music. As such she has developed classes for exploring the music of composers from the Classical and Romantic eras, first at the Tufts Lifelong Learning Institute and most recently at Arlington Center for the Arts. During her musical training, Dotty was inducted into the honorary music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota, studied with the composer Edwin Gerschefski and the pianist Edward Kilenyi, and played piano in a trio that included her cellist friend and her violinist sister. Today, Dotty continues to enjoy attending concerts and recitals and encouraging others to find joy and inspiration in music.
