Calling all students interested in the connection between science and art! Scientists and artists share a passion for discovery and experimentation. Explore the connection in this STEAM (STEM+Arts) class. We will briefly discuss/review the causes of some genetic diseases (cancer, sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis). Using mixed media, drawing and collage, you will create artwork that is based on your understanding of how changes in DNA sequences and other factors change our biology. How can you visually represent mutations? How does this change the shape or function of a cell? These are just some of the questions we will explore. No art experience required, just a willingness to explore! Open to students ages 12 – 18.

  • Arlington Center for the Arts' "Interdisciplinary Alternative Education for the Arts” series grants children who are homeschooled, in co-ops, or other alternative education programs to engage in the arts and socialize with those in their community. Our curriculum comes from established teaching artists, arts educators, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) educators whose teaching philosophies include social/emotional growth into their interdisciplinary lessons. Come learn, create, and celebrate community with us!

Brooks, Mary

she/her/hers Mary Brooks is an artist, a scientist and an educator. She received her Bachelor's degree in Biology from Brown University, her masters in textiles from the London College of Furniture (UK) and her masters in Education from Lesley University. Mary has worked in cancer biology labs throughout her career. After working at the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge MA for many years, she recently decided to dedicate herself fully to STEAM curriculum development. Most recently, Mary was a Senior Teaching Associate in the Learning Lab at Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston MA. She continues to develop arts integrated lessons for middle and high school students. These STEAM programs highlight the role that creativity plays in both art and science. They offer students an opportunity to extend their science learning by creating abstract art that represents various science ideas and processes.
