Discover the wonders of acrylic and oil painting as we explore technique, color theory, and approaches to rendering your work. Use a photo as a reference or work from a concept. Abstract and objective concepts are welcome!

We will explore materials and their proper care, methods of applications, and have time for one-on-one problem solving as well as group critiques. Grow with us, learn something new, and enjoy the company of other creatives!

Some drawing experience helpful.

  • Please note: If you are choosing to do oil painting, please do so outside or in a well ventilated area separate from your living space. Acrylics are fine to use inside your home wherever works best for you.
  • *A reference photo of what you would like to create (online or printed)

  • *Good lighting! You need to be able to see your colors with clarity.

  • *metal pallet knife for mixing (something that tapers at the end works best)

  • *variety of brushes: at least these three shapes: a flat (my personal favorite, any sizes between 6-18, a bright (any sizes between 6-18), and a round (sizes somewhere between 10-4)

  • *Optional, but helpful* a brown pastel

  • *2+ gesso-primed stretched canvas or canvas board (there are value canvas packs that work wonderfully) I would suggest something around the 8" x 10" size, but do as you need.

  • *ivory soap or blue Dawn (for washing brushes)

  • *vinyl or latex gloves (if oil painting)

  • *acrylic paints: Blick has acrylic sets that work wonderfully. Here is a link for the set of 12 and the set of 24:

  • *Oil paints: everyone has different color palates and you will learn what you like together. I recommend starting with 37ml tubes and working up if you are new. Here are some suggested colors with " * " to note what I work with: *titanium white, yellow (cadmium lemon, *cadmium yellow pale, or *Naples yellow), red (*cadmium red, *magenta), blue (*indigo, *prussian blue, french ultramarine, phtalo blue), neutrals (*yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, *transparent brown oxide), and if you want a black or a payne's gray, go for it (but we will be learning substituting grey and black.

  • *rags for cleaning brushes

  • *acrylic medium retarder (slows down drying for acrylics only *optional)

  • *solvent free fluid (if oil painting) and a small jar to put it in

  • I suggest visiting DickBlick.com, as they are shipping and well in stock.
Beaudoin, Cat

she/they Catherine Beaudoin is a young artist currently residing in Boston, Massachusetts. Beaudoin received her bachelor’s degrees in Studio Art and History from Washington & Jefferson College outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her curiosity led her to experiment with several mediums and visual art mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel, graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, found objects, and natural elements. While in Arizona, Beaudoin established her roots as an elementary art teacher and grew passionate for arts ability to address community needs. She began to integrate herself into various sectors of the art world: government, schools, non-profits, community happenings, and various cultural events. This experience gave her insight to the interconnectivity of the art world while illuminating the systems supporting select demographics. Along with their role as the Education and Programs Manager at Arlington Center for the Arts, Beaudoin is a teaching artist, mentor, visual artist, and graduate student. Beaudoin's current research and projects include college access for student-parents and caregivers, equitable access to community arts programming, and ecological art education.
