Drawing Studio: Shadow & Contrast

Experience the pleasure of drawing in this relaxed, supportive class. Weekly drawing projects will help you to develop your observation skills and the ability to visually express what you see. Utilize various drawing materials to explore elements in the art toolbox: line, value, shape, space, texture, and color.
This term will focus on Chiaroscuro & Tenebrism, historic techniques used to create high contrast shading for dramatic effect in drawings. We will explore how to use these shading techniques to further enhance contemporary compositions of your choosing.
We work in a very relaxed atmosphere, so if you enjoy drawing and want to further explore contrast and value in your art, please come! Veteran artists as well as newly minted artists are always welcome.

- General Drawing pad - approximately 8 x 10 (or similar size)
- #2 pencils (Ticonderogas are fine). They are the yellow pencils with pink erasers sold at Staples.
- Kneaded eraser or any other eraser you have that you are comfortable with.
- Paper stumps or Tortillions (used for blending).
- Most of these supplies are available at Playtime in Arlington and/ Staples, Michaels. Please bring these to the first class. Optional supplies are listed below, as you may choose to pick up a few different drawing supplies over the course of the term depending on what you'd like to create.

- Ebony Layout Pencils of different sizes and textures
- Vine Charcoal (Soft) or charcoal pencil (soft)
- White charcoal pencil or pastel
- Black Ultra Fine Sharpie
- Charcoal paper (tinted - middle value (gray or other color)
Sue Funk
A New Jersey native, Sue Funk has lived in Massachusetts for over 20 years. After taking off a few years to raise her children, Sue is back to producing art while also teaching it. A Massachusetts Certified Teacher, Sue has taught Drawing, Cartooning and creatively designed classes at various locations including the Bedford Council On Aging and The T.E.C. Schools.
