Beginning Painting

8 Tuesdays, 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

A great class for beginners or those returning to painting, this class will focus on classical painting with the use of water based paints. Each session will include both demonstrations and time to craft paintings from still life. We will start monochromatically, focusing on shades and one color and then progress to more color and a variety of painting techniques.

  • If you are unsure of the supply list, Denise will demonstrate necessary supplies at the first class.
  • WATER BASED PAINTS
  • Acrylics or water soluble oil paints, “Artisan” by Winsor and Newton are recommended.
  • Colors:
  • colors can vary with each manufacturer, * will indicate this
  • Most painting sets already have a lot of these colors and cost less
  • - White (titanium or flake white)
  • - Cadmium yellow pale or light *
  • - Yellow ochre
  • - Cadmium red light or pale (must say on the label that it is pale or light)
  • - Alizarin Crimson
  • - Burnt Sienna
  • - Burnt Umber
  • - Ivory Black
  • - French Ultramarine Blue
  • - Pthalo Blue ( P is silent)
  • - Pthalo Green or Viridian Green
  • There are additives to the paints that slow the drying process.Artisan brand is recommended.
  • BRUSHES
  • You will need nylon fiber brushes, also named white sable.The sizes can be #2 to #8 as you prefer. Please make sure they are labeled "flat", that makes a huge difference.
  • PALETTE
  • - Paper palette or freezer paper from the supermarket, it is the same.
  • - rags or paper towels
  • CANVAS BOARD or CANVAS, six to eight, 12x16 inches.
Denise Mickilowski

Denise Mickilowski holds a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, PA and an MFA in Painting from Boston University. In addition to her own artwork and teaching, Denise is an accomplished art conservator. Denise exhibitins her work for at Fischbach Gallery in NYC, Arden Gallery in Boston, Southport Galleries, Southport CT and M.A Doran Gallery in Tulsa OK. Her work in in numerous corporate and private collections and can be seen in “100 Boston Painters”, book by Chawky Frenn. Denise has been teaching for the past 20 years in both the college level and adult education programs.
