Modern Calligraphy

Adult (Ages 16+) | This program has been canceled

8 Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm

In this fun, approachable class, students will learn about the tools, preparations and materials of pointed pen calligraphy. Instruction starts with core strokes, basic letter-forms and flourishes using straight pens and black ink, then moves on to the use of oblique pens, alternative inks, and decorative alphabet styles. Students will develop their own calligraphy fonts, address envelopes, create a piece of wall art, and learn about digitizing calligraphy.

  • Additional materials fee payable to the instructor: $30/student
  • Student Materials
  • Hello! I’m looking forward to our calligraphy class! I will take care of sourcing materials like nibs, pen holders, and ink, as it can be hard to find the high quality materials that we will be working with in stores around here. Please bring $30 (check, cash, or venmo) to cover these materials.
  • I’ve put together a list of basics that you should bring with you to class. If you don’t already have most of these items, Playtime or Bob Slate will.
  • Pencil. #2, HB or harder.
  • Pencil Sharpener. Handheld for control.
  • Ruler. Any will do, but a metal ruler with cork backing is very satisfying and useful!
  • Gridded Rhodia pad 8.35” x 11.75”. This paper won’t bleed with the ink that we will be using and is great for practice. If gridded is not available, dotted or blank is fine, but the gridded makes practicing nice and easy!
  • Water vessel. Give an old mug or jar a home in your calligraphy kit.
  • Rag. Something tightly woven that won’t leave fibers in your nib, like an old linen tea cloth or t-shirt.
  • Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are having trouble locating materials or have any questions!
