Pit-Fire Ceramics
Adult Workshop (Age 16+) | This program has been canceled
3 Thursdays, 4/7, 4/14, 4/21, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, 1 Saturday, 4/30, 11:00 - 5:00
Pit-firing is the oldest known method of firing pottery. Because no glaze is used, the pattern of smoke and flame on each piece is unique and dictated solely by the spontaneity of the firing process. In this fun, fast paced workshop, participants will create pots by hand and on the potter’s wheel. We will learn to burnish (rub smooth), which compresses and aligns clay particles to create a shiny hard surface. After an initial firing in an electric kiln, we will spend a day outdoors, firing the work in an above-ground container, using paper, sawdust and wood shavings as combustibles. History and development of this fascinating, dynamic process will be covered, as well as time at the end to discuss and wax-finish the work.
Please note: Some ceramics experience desirable and experienced wheel-throwers may use the pottery wheels. Finished pit-fired ceramics are not suitable for food or liquid.
