Animal Anatomy Intensives: Big Cats

This class will focus on understanding the anatomy of the big cats, from the basic construction of the feline to the specifics of the skeletal structure and musculature.

Students will start off learning the basic forms, solidifying their understanding of the construction of through generalized abstractions. From there, students will delve into the specifics of anatomy and learn how to properly approach the skeletal structure and musculature.

Students will learn how to locate and identify the bony landmarks and the major muscle masses, and work to incorporate these anatomical features in a way that enhances the three-dimensionality of the form in their drawings. Students will utilize and work from an array of reference to obtain their goals, including photographs, custom instructor diagrams, maquette sculptures, and museum-quality specimens.

This course is primarily a drawing class, and students will need a sketchbook or drawing board, tracing paper, drawing supplies (pencils, pens, eraser) and a binder to accommodate the large number of handouts.

Tom Babbey

Tom Babbey has studied at the Watts Atelier for over a decade, and has taught at the atelier for nearly as long. As an avid naturalist, Tom's love for wildlife led him to discover his passion for animal art and creature design at an early age. Tom currently works as a freelance illustrator and concept artist for clients such as Wizards of the Coast, Paizo Publishing, Wizkids, Cubicle 7, Fantasy Flight Games, Sony Online, and Griffin Road Games, and is the lead Art Director for Draco Studios “Dragonbond’ setting.
