Books can be great places to collect and share your artwork, or they can be works of art on their own. Explore the wonderful world of artist books by learning the skills of building books!

We will create a variety of soft cover and hard cover books out of paper and learn about the materials and tools commonly used.

This class is designed for those with no or limited experience in book arts.

  • Consumables - Required


    2 – 20 x 30 sheets cover paper for your books. Lokta is a great choice. 2 – 20 x 30 sheets

    1 or 2 sheets of book board

    1 spool of waxed linen thread, 4 cord, 50 grams, or some other sturdy string or embroidery thread

    PVA glue, white

    Pad of paper, drawing paper, copy paper, even scrap paper can be used for sample books – 8 x 11

    Bring a notebook for notes.

    Old phonebook if you have one.

    Tools:

    Bring what you have of these items, you may or may not use everything here. The instructor will have extra tools to lend to students for class times.


    #1 darning needle or needle with large eye and dull point

    1 curved needle can be very helpful, but not necessary

    1 cutting mat or other cutting surface, minimum 8.5 x 12 inches

    1 bookbinding awl or other sharp tool to push through paper and board

    1 bonefolder

    1 craft knife

    1 ruler 12, 18, or 24 inches, cork back preferred

    1 flat paint brush, foam brush, or glue brush for glue, 1.5 to 2 inches

    Scissors

    Pencil or pen

    Binder clips – 2


    If you happen to have any of the following, they are helpful: small, portable paper cutter, paper tear bar, heavy books, or weight for pressing books, hammer and hole punch, Japanese screw punch, or other strong hole punches.
