Ever thought of a book made of plastic bags? ? Packaging material?

In this class you will learn to see the building blocks of artistic and creative books all around you! Come and play with the common, everyday objects you have around you to build simple handmade books!

  • Bring what you have of these items, depending on the repurposed materials, you may or may not use everything here. The teaching artist is bringing extra book-building supplies, such as the needles, awls and so on. You can focus on bringing your repurposed materials to use in the spirit of your imagination.
  • #1 darning needle or needle with large eyes
  • 1 curved needle can be very helpful, but not necessary
  • 1 cutting mat or other cutting surface, minimum 8.5 x 12 inches
  • 1 bookbinding awl or other sharp tool to push through paper and board
  • 1 bonefolder
  • 1 craft knife
  • 1 ruler 12, 18, or 24 inches, cork back preferred
  • 1 flat paint brush, foam brush, or glue brush for glue, 1.5 to 2 inches
  • Scissors
  • Pencil or pen
  • If you happen to have any of the following, they are helpful: small, portable paper cutter, paper tear bar, heavy books, or weight for pressing books.
  • Consumables
  • 1 spool of waxed linen thread, 4 cord, 50 grams, or some other sturdy string or embroidery thread
  • PVA glue is ideal, but craft glue or Elmer’s will work.
  • Pad of paper, drawing paper, copy paper, even scrap paper can be used for sample books
  • Bring a notebook for notes or we can make a quick one in class.
  • Old phonebook if you have one.
  • You are welcome to bring any repurposed materials you think may work for a book cover. I will bring several options, as well.
