Advance your pastel drawing skills while exploring the wonderful world of the human figure!

Through drawing demonstrations, and an online forum we will work together to advance our figurative technical drawing skills. We will deepen our understanding of gesture and proportion, values, edges, layering and color mixing.

  • A set of 30 Soft Pastels (larger is great) -- no oil pastels. If you have Nupastels that is great but they can only get you so far, you must also have a set of softer pastels in addition. Feel free to bring what you have. If you already know you love the medium, you may want to invest in Artist quality pastels. If you're not sure, you may want to choose Student grade. Artist grade are nicer to use, as they have more pigment and less binder, but they are more expensive.
  • Artist quality brands:
  • Rembrandt
  • Sennelier
  • Girault
  • Blick Artist’s grade
  • Student grade brands:
  • Mungyo soft pastels 64 color set (most cost effective, must purchase online, not quite as high quality but a great color mix and excellent for the price!)
  • Alphacolor
  • Pastel Pencils: Carbothello has a set of 12, Conte soft pastel pencils are also great also. If you just buy a few open stock, make sure to get a variety of colors, including black, white, gray, light and dark brown.
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Plastic eraser
  • Laid paper or sanded paper, if you want to experiment more with both, get both, if you have a preference use that. Suggested paper types: Sanded Paper (Art Spectrum Colorfix is great)
  • Laid paper: Strathmore Pastel Paper, Canson Mi-tientes, Fabriano Ingres, Hahnemühle Ingres
  • Sandpaper block
  • Sharpener with wide enough opening for pastel pencils
  • Optional:
  • *Prismacolor NuPastels (work great on sanded papers and for initial layers)
  • *Workable Fixative
  • *Glassine
  • *Wet wipes
  • * Paper towels
  • * 1” Bristle Brush
