Alla Prima is creating a painting in one go!

We’ll learn how to layer wet paint, mix color, create form with values, experiment with edges, and handle brushes, from economy of stroke to a higher level of finish. Although alla prima often implies wet-on-wet and is applied to oil painting, acrylic painters are welcome and will be advised on using a medium to make the paint open longer so it acts more like oil.

Open to Oil, Water-Soluble Oil, and Acrylic painters.

  • Bring what you have, or get some basics. You can start very simply and I can guide you with what you may need to add as the class progresses.
  • 1 or 2 Canvas Panels or Stretched Canvas per class, depending on how fast you work. Choose size(s) you are comfortable with - 9x12, 11 x 14, 12 x16, 16x20, etc.
  • Titanium white
  • Lemon yellow
  • Cad yellow
  • Yellow ochre
  • Cad red med., or Scarlet, or Napthol
  • Alizarin Crimson, or quinacridone red/ magenta
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Phthalo blue
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Burnt umber
  • Ivory black
  • Optional Paint Colors:
  • Raw Sienna*
  • Cobalt blue*
  • A Green
  • Odorless mineral spirits (for oil)
  • Solvent container (silicoil works great)
  • Liquin (for oil)
  • Liquitex slow-dry medium (acrylic)
  • Rolls of paper towels and/ or rags
  • Containers for medium
  • Container for water (acrylic)
  • Variety of Brushes (If you come with 6 brushes, 2 small, 2 medium and two med/Large, that can be enough)
  • My recommendation would be to make sure you have a variety of sizes represented, at least one in a 1/4”, 1/2”, 1” in Bright; 1/4 - 1/2” Filbert (I like #4) and a small Round, 1- 4 (also get a larger one if you like rounds). This will get you started. I’ll mention more about possible bushes you might like to get in class.
  • palette knife(s)
  • Some kind of palette: palette paper, or glass with scraper
  • (Masterson’s Stay Wet Palette works great for transporting all types of paint. If you work with acrylic, please make sure to also get the palette inserts and sponge, but you can also bring a spray bottle to mist your paints to keep them wet and just use regular palette paper.)
