In this exciting and informative course you will explore your own artistic voice and vision through narrative picture making. You will be directed through exercises of self discovery to find what subject matter and stories you’d most like to tell. Then you’ll learn how to convert your conceptual vision into a visual story!

We will address the mechanics of picture making, from story to formal elements, composition, visual hierarchy, color strategies, and mood through the creations of your own works. This class is intended to help you find more of your own artistic voice to strengthen your personal art works.

  • Drawing & Painting: open to pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, pastel, acrylic, oil (note that if you are using black and white media some topics discussed will be about color).
  • Supplies for Ideation:
  • (I will provide worksheets to hone in on your vision)
  • Sketchbook
  • HB/ #2 pencil
  • Pen if you wish
  • Kneaded eraser
  • White plastic eraser
  • Blending stump
  • Sharpener
  • Optional: *any other items/mediums you may wish to use to compile ideas in your sketchbook (i.e. watercolor pencils, colored pencils, watercolor, magazines for images, etc.)
  • Supplies for working out compositions:
  • I use my laptop and photoshop to compose paintings, by taking photos and creating various layers in photoshop to create compositions. I will teach you this method, however, I will teach you other methods as well (you don’t necessarily need to have this digital component). You can work everything out in sketches or even more intuitively as you work. Our goal is going to be to find what method of picture making will work best for your own personality and the style of work you hope to create.
  • Supplies for Creation:
  • (What medium will best convey your voice? We will work to discover if that might be drawing, painting, collage, etc. and hone in on what medium should be used to best communicate your message.)
  • *Medium of your choice
