Pastel is a medium for someone who loves color, loves the tactile immediacy of drawing, and appreciates the forgiving nature of a medium. Learn how to tweak the highlights, enrich the shadows in rich color, and use emphasis and variety to strengthen your compositions. You choose your subject matter; abstract, still life, landscape, flowers, animals and birds. Bring imagery that interests you. Suitable for intermediate to advanced pastel students

  • Bring what pastels that you have.
  • Pastels go from hard- like Nu pastels, medium= Rembrandt, softer=Schminke, really soft-Sennelier, velvet soft-Unison or Great American. Terry Ludwig DARK 2 is a great set for darks

  • this is a good first set: Rembrandt 1/2 stick set of 48 or 60 set ( non Alpha color sets or oil pastels
  • Besides Pastels you’ll need:
  • •India ink
  • •Watercolors or pelican Gouache 12 set or Gouache tubes
  • •Water containers, large brushes size 10 round & flat 1”
  • •One can Krylon workable fix or Spectra Fix( non toxic)
  • Paper
  • •1 22”x30” sheet Rives BFK can be torn into quaters
  • •1 22’x30” watercolor paper cold press or hot press
  • •one sheet sanded paper for brilliant lush color
  • Uart 400 sanded or Canson di tientes TOUCH (sanded) or Pastelmat= softer sanded surface
  • Other supplies
  • ½ cheap flat brush
  • bottle rubbing alcohol
  • soft vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, erasers
  • lightweight rigid drawing surface = foam board or a drawing board
  • one cheap (hardware store) or used 1/4” brush to knock off the extra pastel dust
  • Paper towels
