In this class we will explore a variety of strategies and approaches to painting imaginative realist imagery, or paintings of things that don’t exist, in a manner that yields realistic results. We will explore a procedural manner of thinking, designing, and problem solving, with inherent variables built in, enabling the flexibility necessary to adapt to a range of challenges. Strategies covered will range from the use of studies to work out problems in a rational and focused manner, to employing imaginative drawing strategies for designing the basic conception, to working with live models or photo references whether they are personally produced or appropriated, and the construction of maquettes or miniatures as needed. We will also closely look at how knowledge derived from classical training can be translated and adapted to this type of work and the incredible asset that it provides in the production of such work. This knowledge provides a deep understanding of the nature of light and color, which enables its manipulation or even substitution, and it provides a comprehension of anatomical structure and conceptual 3D space, both of which are crucial to making the imaginary mechanically and spatially believable. Utilizing everything previously mentioned, students will develop an image based on a fantastical narrative of their choice, and be guided in building a strategy to optimize its potential outcome
