Charcoal figure is the core to the Studio Incamminati’s introductory curriculum. The medium lends itself to painterly mass drawing and is easily and quickly corrected, making it a perfect channel to learn the fundamentals in a way that prepares one for painting. In this class, Studio Incamminati instructor Kat Haverkamp will walk you through techniques for seeing, constructing and correcting the figure with a focus on gesture, proportion, light and shadow, and relative values.

The course will start with short gesture drawings (1-2 min in length) that will progress in length (5-, 10-, 20-min etc.) over the first few weeks. By the end of the course, students will be doing drawings 60-min in length and potentially longer (2- or 3-hours). There will be some fluidity to how quickly the progression happens, based on the class’s needs and desires. In general, the class is focused on shorter poses and building foundations, and is not a multi-day-pose class (though quite a lot can be accomplished in the 1-3 hour time range in charcoal).
