Students will study the elements of successful still-life painting regarding composition, light and shadow, color harmony, negative space, and subject consideration. Students will be shown the pathways for successful painting construction through a grisaille block-in using straight lines and angles to accurately judge the space between objects. As the underpainting progresses student will learn about wipe-out techniques to refine the underpainting and create the adequate structure that is ready for color more fully. Here they will learn about the value range and value relationships that will help the student glide more easily into a full-color painting. Students will then learn how to block in full color into the still life while being taught, through observation and kinetic practice, an understanding of the three aspects of color (hue, saturation and chroma) and how to identify these properties in a subject and translate them to paint.
