This workshop will investigate the notion of drawing and painting during the Renaissance as scholarly acts. Artists during the 15th and 16th century were not only artists in today’s sense, but they brought craftsmanship as well as a myriad of mathematic and scientific disciplines with them into their studio – this endowed them with unique perspectives on the wide range of materials that could be used for art-making. From initial sketch to finished painting, students will learn the steps to create a painting using traditional Renaissance tools and processes, including mixing oil paint from scratch. Students will learn about artistic ideas generated in the Renaissance, create 5 hand-mixed oil paint colors, learn sketching and planning techniques, and paint from a live model.

Studio Incamminati’s Artist-Scholar Series are workshops that go beyond the basic art class and investigate the creation of materials as well as the application, science, and historical narratives surrounding classical and modern techniques through discussion and hands-on investigation.
