Students of this 10-week online course will learn and apply strategies for developing a single, long “worked” drawing. Starting with research, preparatory studies, and material studies we’ll discuss major design and visual composition concepts as well as material considerations. Once a visual guide has been developed, we’ll move into the process of building a long tonal drawing with a focus on a rich charcoal and graphite mixed-media application.

Layering a drawing, working with various materials, and practical problem-solving with be demonstrated as Evan constructs a drawing from start to finish. Lots of emphasis will be placed on navigating the start, the middle-game, and the resolve of an artwork. Students of this course are encouraged to work from their own stagged still-lives if possible, or a well-researched reference. Subject matter will be discussed on the first day of class.
