The mandatory drawing skill-sets apprentices had to master in the workshops of the high-Renaissance was charcoal, sanguine chalk, and pen and ink. By far, the most beautiful of the three mediums is Sanguine Red Chalk. Leonardo seems to have been the first to embrace red chalk for studies in the years he worked on the Last Supper. Michelangelo produced beautiful Sanguine chalk drawing in preparation for the Sistine Ceiling. Raphael, Del Sarto, Pontormo, Parmigianino, and the vast majority of Renaissance and Baroque Masters used this Blood Red Iron Oxide Chalk. It continued to be the most popular drawing medium in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

There will be a tour-de-force visual presentation of the history of the Medium and its foremost practitioners. After which, Michael will demonstrate how to develop head studies on toned paper using this time-honored material. He will utilize authentic Hermite imported from Italy as well as Sanguine chalks produced today. Michael will also cover head construction in-depth using the proprietary CSI proportion system and the best Aspective views. Separate demonstrations will detail the construction of the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. Finally, the class will learn how to develop Sanguine Velatura block-ins for paintings.

As a bonus, Michael will demonstrate his pen and ink sketchbook technique for which he has received international acclaim. This workshop goes beyond drawing what one sees by revealing what to look for and sets forth the needed skill-sets to proceed on one's path to mastery.
