The goal of this course is to give students a solid method of planning and executing a portrait in pastel. The class will start with a discussion of materials and a demonstration. Then, students will have ample time to hone their skills as they work from the live model. The instructor will
show different methods for applying the pastels and go over a variety of painting surfaces.

Students will learn to manage the complexity of information in a portrait by creating compositional sketches and color studies, then use those studies to begin a multiple day portrait. This class will provide an approach for using a limited palette of colors, as well as strategies for achieving believable color and an authentic likeness. The instructor will alsodiscuss experimental pastel techniques and how to use color charts to manage the vast number of colors generally used in a pastel painting
