Henry VIII aspired to have the largest and best European navy, which would dominate the Seas and keep his enemies at bay during his reign. He built the world’s largest battleship, the “Henri Grace a Dieu”, which his subjects irreverently dubbed the “Great Harry”. In response to a French attack at Portsmouth Harbor, Henry’s battleship “Mary Rose” turned too quickly, which resulted in the flooding of her open gunports, causing her to sink rapidly, taking about 600 sailors and marines down with her. The wreck was discovered and raised in the 20th century and has been largely restored for public viewing. (Limit 40)
