Nutrition For Aging-How Food Systems, Physiology, & Social Context Shape Frailty & Resilience
Aging transforms nutritional needs while modern food systems, declining cooking skills, and social isolation increasingly undermine nutritional adequacy in older adults. This lecture will explore nutrition for aging through an integrated lens—from soil depletion and food processing to physiologic changes, sarcopenia, and malnutrition risk. Participants will learn how agricultural practices, ultra-processed foods, social milieu, and functional limitations intersect with age-related changes in appetite, digestion, and muscle metabolism. Practical strategies for screening, prevention, and intervention—including protein optimization, culinary adaptation, and socially informed care—will be emphasized to support muscle strength, independence, and quality of life in later years.
