A Somewhat Surprising Divorce: How/Why the 1st Amendment Split Church & State

Prior to the American Revolution, many of the colonial governments enforced religious rules such that church and state were definitely not separated. As the revolutionaries led the political separation of the thirteen colonies from England, some of its leaders came to believe that religion needed to dwell in a separate sphere from government. This lecture will explain how the disestablishment clause of the First Amendment became the law of the land.
