Role of Zinc in Macular Degeneration
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that zinc can reduce the progression of intermediate macular degeneration. This effect is greater if antioxidants are taken at the same time. Drusen or sub-retinal deposits are the earliest features of macular degeneration a clinician can see. Yet UTMB-researchers found that drusen have a very high content of zinc. This seems confusing, so scientists are now studying why zinc shows up in both helpful and harmful ways in macular degeneration.
