Natural and Human Disasters: What Lessons Can We Learn from Them?

Class | Available (Membership Required)

We often distinguish between natural and human-caused disasters but usually a combination of natural events and human activity contributes to them. In this course, we will look at some notable disasters and the factors behind them. We will begin with the greatest disaster in American History: (the 1900 Storm) and other notable Galveston and Gulf Coast hurricanes over the years. Then, we will shift our focus to the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, and the Challenger explosion; Pearl Harbor and the attacks of September 11. We will consider whether these could have been prevented or mitigated and explore what it means for our own situations. (Limit 35)

  • No class March 20.
