Historical Look at Big Bands in America

Big bands played an important role in the American music scene. We will discuss the leaders of these bands: Guy Lombardo, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Chick Webb, as well as others; their vocalists and the impact they made. We will discuss female vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, and Helen Forrest; male vocalists Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Tex Beneke, and others. We will examine the instrumentation, musical composers, and arrangers of the music and locations where they performed, such as the Cotton Club, Savoy Ballroom, and Carnegie, to name a few.
