What does it take to restore a dangerous, derelict historic home? The League-Kempner House was one of Galveston’s “most at risk” houses, having been neglected for years. After Janie Mitcham purchased the house in January 2021, she undertook a major restoration to make the home structurally sound, tackling a leaky roof, rotting wood, crumbling walls, and a termite infestation among other obstacles.  Today, the home is owned by a nonprofit and efforts continue to restore this historic mansion to its former grandeur.
