DAS Field Trip to Lone Pine Arch & Pictograph Cave
Saturday, October 24
  • Meet at 8:15am at Linn's Market on Sunset Boulevard in the SW corner of the lot.
  • We'll consolidate cars and leave promptly at 8:30am.
  • Bring lunch, water, snacks, hiking boots, water, and layers since it can be windy.
  • Have a full tank of gas, and there are no facilities after we leave the Shivwits Reservation.
  • Carpooling is strongly recommended, and you should not hesitate to come if you don't have a high clearance vehicle.
The October fieldtrip will be on October 24 instead of the usual third Saturday due to the recent rains. We will meet at 8:15am and leave at 8:30am sharp. The meeting place will be at Linn's Market on Sunset Boulevard. Park at the southwest corner of the lot. The fieldtrip will be to three rock art sites in three different locations, all off the Motoqua Road in western Washington County, our very own wild West. We will travel down Sunset Boulevard and Old Highway 91, then turn off toward Gunlock for 17 miles of paved highway, then to Motoqua Road, a well graded gravel road for sixteen miles. We will turn off Motoqua Road and travel down a rocky two-track to a parking area just below the scenic Lone Pine Arch. Just around the corner are several anthropomorphs unique to Washington County and resembling the patterned body anthropomorphs of eastern Nevada. Next, we will return to Motoqua Road and travel down to just before Jackson Spring and turn off on a dirt two-track for about 2 miles. High clearance is necessary to go up and over a slick rock area. From our parking area, we will hike a short distance to an interesting petroglyph area, then walk down a shallow wash to a small but very interesting petroglyph cave. Why are the sites where they are and what do the mean?

NO DOGS allowed on field trips, per Utah Tech policy.
