This course looks at the history of the fur trade, based largely on the masterful work by Bernard DeVoto (see course title). Also, an examination of beaver trapping, buffalo hunting, the life of the "Mountain Man," and the opening of the American West, including a discussion of "Manifest Destiny."
Douglas Bowen
Doug holds a BA in German Literature and has taught for ICL since 2003. He and his family moved to St. George in 1990, after Doug retired as a non-profit agency executive in several states and Germany. Doug served as the director for ICL’s Annual Geology bus tour from 2018-2025.
