Saturday, March 21 we will venture to to Lion's Mouth and Red Anthro, both are north of St. George.
Meet at the downtown Smith's Grocery at 9:00am for a 9:15 departure. The downtown Smith's Grocery is located at the corner of Bluff Street and St. George Boulevard. Park near the gasoline pumps at Smith's.
What to bring: Bring proper hiking shoes, water, snacks and lunch and a windbreaker or jacket just in case. Have a full tank of gas. This an all day trip arriving back in St George by 4pm.
Road conditions: The roads are mixed paved and good gravel except for the last two miles which is dirt. Low clearance vehicle will work until the dirt road but carpooling is always recommended.
Lion's Mouth is located in a large alcove and consists of numerous pictographs. The site is Paiute and shows a definite "story." The Red Anthro is a large pictograph finely executed and preserved and is infrequently visited. From our meeting place we will travel up Bluff Street through Central and turn off on the road to Pinto and arrive at Lion's Mouth. The trail to Lion's Mouth is less than one mile roundtrip and is a gentle uphill. Gaining access to the alcove is more difficult in that it involves a short steep section (assistance is easily given here). From Lion's Cave we will travel to the Irontown Historic Site which has a toilet and picnic tables. The site is interesting in itself as a 1860"s iron manufacturing town. From here will will travel to the Red Anthro site north and west of Cedar City. The site is quite isolated and interesting as a possible skywatcher with Cave Valley style characteristics. The route to the Red Anthro is short moderate climb of less than one mile. The roads are mixed paved and good gravel except for the last two miles which is dirt. Low clearance will work until the dirt road but carpooling is always recommended. Bring proper hiking shoes, water, snacks and lunch and a windbreaker or jacket just in case. Have a full tank of gas. This an all day trip arriving back in St George by 4pm.
