Date/Time: Saturday, February 28, Black Bear Diner, Exit 13 location. Meet at 8:45am for 9:00am departure. Please gather near the rear of Black Bear. If you are leaving your vehicle, please park on the public road to the west.
Destination: Basketmaker Pictographs, South Fork Indian Canyon. 65 miles northeast of St George. BLM managed site. A large site with scores of multicolored anthropomorphs. The best in southern Utah and one of the best in Utah. Timeframe 1500 BC to 500 AD.
Vehicle Requirements: High clearance required, 4wd preferred. The last 5 miles to this site is quite sandy though often travelled. You may take low clearance vehicles to where the sandy road begins, then carpool.
What to Bring: Snacks, lunch, water, and dress for the weather. It will be cooler there. Carpooling highly recommended.
NO DOGS allowed on hikes per Utah Tech policy.
Limit: 20 DAS members.
We will travel from Black Bear on I-15, turn off to Hurricane, then travel to the Apple Valley Chevron station for a restroom break. We will then travel through Hildale/Colorado City and turn onto Cane Beds Road passing by Coral Sands State Park, swinging around to the east side of the dunes and park at a large lot before entering the sandy road. From the parking lot to the site we follow a BLM constructed trail 170 feet down to the site itself which is beautifully managed by the BLM. we will take our time in coming up to the vehicles. We should return to St George between 3pm and 4pm.
