Time and Place of Departure: Saturday February 7, 2025. Meet at 8:15 am for 8:30 am departure at Black Bear Restaurant at Exit 13, I-15. Please park on the west side of the restaurant to avoid regular customer's parking.
Recommended Vehicle: High clearance but 4wd not needed. Mix of paved and unpaved roads with two difficult off-road sections requiring proper vehicles and experienced drivers. Carpooling available and highly recommended.
NO DOGS allowed on hikes per Utah Tech policy.
We will caravan to Apple Valley Chevron, then drive to three sites along the BLM Scenic Byway (or nearby), one a large rock with various petroglyphs (some archaic). and then to Yellow Man, a unique pictograph site with additional petroglyphs, and then to the Canaan Gap petroglyphs (also known as "Cookie Cutter") Each of these sites is different and makes for an interesting trip through picturesque scenery. The first site requires about one mile off trail hiking along a moderate slope. Yellow Man requires a very steep, very short climb. Canaan Gap requires crossing a steep-sided sandy gully. Evaluate your suitability for this hike. Plan for a full day due to the number of sites and the driving. There is much to see and do, Please stay with the group and tell the leader in person if you are leaving the group for any reason.
Please bring hiking boots, water, lunch, snacks and dress for the weather. This area is higher than St George so plan accordingly. Always have a full tank of gas on these types of trips. Carpooling is highly desirable.
