Art Deco led to the Bauhaus which led to Modernism in the 1950s and 60s. Miller-Knoll and their designers, including Saarinen, Bertoia, Eames, Nelson, led the wave. Celia grew up hearing the backstories of designers and in a home full of the furniture of the era. Indulge in factual and entertaining history of midcentury modern designs, culminating in a field trip to the Bertoia Foundation gallery where you will see, touch and sit in examples.
This is a 4-week course, including three in-class lectures and the fourth class will be a field trip on Feb. 5 to the Harry Bertoia Foundation gallery to see live examples and experience midcentury modern firsthand.
Celia Bertoia
Celia Bertoia is the Director and Founder of the Harry Bertoia Foundation and the youngest daughter of designer Harry Bertoia. She grew up amidst MidCentury modernist furnishings and designers. Her biographical book, The Life and Work of Harry Bertoia, was published in 2015. She lectures internationally on her father and was the executive producer of the documentary Harry Bertoia: Master of Metal. Celia is a fine arts appraiser through the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), specializing in post war and modern art.
