History of Washington County, Utah

This class offers a course of study that discusses Utah generally, but then focuses special attention on the exploration, settlement and development of Utah's Dixie (Washington County). The course will use as its text, A History of Washington County; From Isolation to Destination by Douglas A. Alder and Karl E. Brooks. Students will gain a better understanding of the people and the events that have shaped the history of southwestern Utah, including the land and its early inhabitants, settlement, isolation and the Americanization of Washington County and Utah.
The first class is a field trip to the Mountain Meadows Massacre site on Wednesday, Sept. 10th. Meet at 10am on the far east side of the Udvar Hazy building parking lot, where Loren will take attendance and give you the course syllabus, along with directions to the Dan Sill Hill site. Bring water and snacks. Carpooling is strongly recommended. The group will travel first to the Dan Sill Hill site, where Loren will lecture for about 45 minutes at the monument, then the group will travel to a second monument site at Magotsu Creek for a short 15-minute presentation.
