Ghost Towns of Southern Utah

Class - Fall Only | FULL (Membership Required)

This 7-week course consists of two classroom lectures and six field trips to ghost towns. This class will provide an overview of ghost towns in Washington County and two ghost towns in Iron County, Utah. Ghost towns discussed will include: Adventure, Atkinville, Bloomington, Price, Tonaquint, Harrisburg, Hebron, Dalton, Duncan's Retreat, Grafton, Northrop, and Shunesburg in Washington County, and Irontown and Stateline in Iron County.

Classroom lectures will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 and Friday, Oct. 3 from 10:00-10:50am in Hazy 121. 

Ghost Town field trips are scheduled on Tuesdays: Sept 16, 23, 30 & Oct 7, 14, 21.

Friday, Sept.12: Classroom lecture & field trip sign-ups - 10-10:50am - Introduction on exploration, settlement and abandonment of towns. Discussion of Atkinville, Price, Tonaquint and Bloomington.

Tuesday, Sept. 16: Field trip to Hebron Cemetery - 7:45am-1pm

Tuesday, Sept. 23: Field trip to Harrisburg - 7:45am-12pm

Tuesday, Sept. 30: Field trip to Grafton - 7:45am-1pm

Friday, Oct. 3: Classroom lecture - 10 to 10:50 a.m. - This lecture will focus on the ghost towns of Dalton, Mountain Dell, Adventure, Northrop, Duncan’s Retreat, Shunesburg and Zion.

Tuesday, Oct. 7: Field trip to Silver Reef - 7:45am-11am (bring $3 entrance fee for museum)

Tuesday, Oct. 14: Field trip to Hamblin and Holt cemeteries. New this year! - 7:45am-1pm

Tuesday, Oct. 21: Field trip to Stateline and Irontown in Iron County, UT - 7:45am-4pm
