MidCentury Modern Design (ZOOM)

Class - Spring Only | This course has been canceled

The affluence after World War II engendered a fresh wave of modernist design in both functional and artistic pieces. Instructor Celia Bertoia grew up surrounded by the backstories of designers and in a home full of the furniture of the era. We will examine the history of the Herman Miller and Knoll furniture companies and their designers including Saarinen, Bertoia, Eames, Nelson, Nakashima and Noguchi. Indulge in factual and entertaining history of midcentury modern furniture and architectural designs, culminating in a field trip to the Harry Bertoia Foundation gallery where you will see, touch and sit in examples of the time.

This is a 4-week course, including three in-class lectures and the fourth class will be a field trip on Feb. 6 to the Harry Bertoia Foundation gallery to experience midcentury modern firsthand.
