Contributions of the Ancient Greeks to Western Civilization

Class - Spring Only | Registration opens Friday, January 3, 2025 9:30 AM MST

What do you think about when you think of Greece? An exotic land far away filled with crumbling buildings, stories of gods and goddesses, the movie ‘Zorba, the Greek’, yummy Greek food, islands surrounded by beautiful blue water, etc.?

While all this may be correct, have you ever considered what we owe the Ancient Greeks for their many contributions to us? What contributions, you may ask? Well, let me name a few: democracy, the alphabet, philosophy, political science, some of the world’s greatest literature, architecture, theater, their mythology, science, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, cartography, military innovations, and inventions such as the. alarm clock, umbrella, central heating, elevator, catapult, etc.

Come explore the land of Greece with me -- from its beginnings to the end of the Classical period in 323 B.C.E. upon the death of Alexander the Great.

No class on March 11 (Spring Break)
