China: Seminar on Contemporary Issues
Class - Spring Only | Registration opens Friday, January 3, 2025 9:30 AM MST
This course will focus on contemporary issues in China primarily based on participation by students. Independent study and discussion will be encouraged. A short presentation will be delivered by the instructors for each class to provide a basis for discussion. For example, if the subject of the class is the Tik Tok issue, the instructors will give a broad overview of AI in China, surveillance technology and censorship programs followed by discussion and analysis. Other examples of possible topics: PRC v. Taiwan, China's real estate market, integration of Uighurs and Tibetans, and PRC attempts to control ethnic Chinese that live outside of China. The instructors spent 21 days in China recently and plan to spend some class time chatting about their findings a) China rejuvenation, b) socialist core values, c) moral education, and d) geography.
