This workshop will concentrate on learning to paint the portrait from life in oil. By using a limited palette, a clear breakdown of value and color temperature will be addressed. Through a step-by-step process to portrait painting, Russell will demonstrate drawing structure, color harmony, likeness, color mixing, and composition in order to complete an alla prima portrait. In addition, Old Master painting techniques such as chiaroscuro and sfumato will be discussed.

Students can expect to complete 2 portraits during the workshop.

Model Fees are included in the tuition.

Russell Harris (b. 1970) has a bachelor of fine arts and a master of arts in teaching from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He continued his studies at the Schuler School of Fine Art, The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and participated in an intensive workshop with famed portrait artists Daniel E. Green, Sean Cheetham, and Will Wilson.

Russell has exhibited his artwork at The Bridgeport Art Center in Chicago, IL, The John Pence Gallery in San Francisco CA, Gallery 1261 in Denver CO, Butler Institute Of American Art in Youngstown OH, and the DuSable Museum in Chicago, IL to name but a few. His artwork has also been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, American Art Collector, Spectrum Fantastic Art, and International Artist Magazine.
