Do you ever feel stuck relying on limited image references or constrained by what you can set up in your space? Do you have a color crush on another artist and wish you could incorporate their magic into your work? Are you eager to work more inventively or combine multiple inspirations but worry about achieving a cohesive painting?
In this transformative 5-day workshop, you’ll gain the confidence to move beyond single references and unlock the full potential of color harmony and palette manipulation.
Days 1-2: Catch the Vibe
We’ll start by diving into an “inspirational” color palette or vibe, exploring it through the language of oil paint in focused color studies. Together, we’ll analyze and deconstruct an artist’s choices in color, value, and composition. I’ll provide a variety of palettes and vibe images for you to choose from, but if you’d like to bring your own, please discuss it with me in advance for approval.
Days 3-5: Pigments of Your Imagination
With a neutral reference image (a selection of portrait or figurative references will be available), we’ll embark on a larger color study. Here, you’ll apply the insights gained in the first two days to create a dynamic piece. You’ll be encouraged to make bold, personal decisions—adding backgrounds, inventing scenes, or transforming the reference entirely. If you’d prefer to bring your own reference, just let me know ahead of time.
These color studies will become invaluable guides for future full paintings, giving you the tools to transcend any single source of inspiration.
