This class is for new and continuing students. Students will explore various materials, recipes and techniques for making and finishing papier- mâché sculpture, with emphasis given to the advantages and quirks of the medium. Beginning students will learn the basic techniques for construction with guided projects while returning students will continue to explore the media with projects of their own. Skill level: All

  • Materials Needed:
  • Bring to Class Week 1: Newspaper or Telephone Book (week 1) Waste printer paper (home of?ce type) or school-rule/legal paper (week 1) Cornstarch (week 1) Roll of 3/4” Masking Tape (week 1) Airtight bowl with lid for storing paste (week 1) Microwave proof 2 cup Measuring Cup (week 1) Measuring spoons (week 1) Spoon or small spatula for stirring (week 1) Small box for transporting project (week 1) Scissors NOTE: Both large and small pairs are useful (week 1) Rubber gloves (optional) Materials Needed Weeks 2 thru 6: All purpose ?our (week 1) Not necessary for ?rst class Aluminum foil (week 2) Wire for armatures (week 2) *Large bottle of Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) i.e. “Elmer’s Glue-All” (NOT School Glue!!) (week 2) *Paper pulp (week 2) Sources may include:? • Shredded documents & junk mail? • Cheap toilet paper • Paper Pulp — Axner Pottery Supply? • Cellulose Recycled Paper Insulation at Home Centers (not recommended) *Boiled linseed oil (or ?axseed oil) (week 2) *Sheetrock All-Purpose 3.5 Qt. Pre-Mixed Joint Compound from Home Depot (week 2) *Quart ziplock bags for storing paper compound (week 2) Bits and pieces for multimedia (wire, twine, cloth, buttons, old keys, etc) (week 3) Acrylic artist paints (week 4) Spray ?nish (week 5)
  • Optional: *Sawdust (the ?ner the better; try home center saw stations as a source) (week 2) *Potassium Sorbate, 5 oz. bottle (purchase online or at Brewer’s Cellar, Winter Springs) *Calcium Carbonate (limestone powder), small bag — Axner *Small to medium pot for boiling water (optional) * These items are necessary for mixing batches of carton pierre. You can hold off on acquiring ? these until needed.
  • Equipment Needed at Home: Microwave (week 1) Microwave-safe bowl (week 1) Small bowls for water, paste, paint (week 1) fettling knife (week 2) Box cutter, craft knives (week 2) NOTE: Get the sharpest you can SAFELY handle Sandpaper in various grits from course to ?ne (week 2) *Spatula (week 2) *Large bowls, one or two (week 2) *Putty knife (week 2) NOTE: For handling joint compound *Mixer (essential) (week 2) •Large Wire Mesh Cooking Sieve (week 2) NOTE: For draining water blended pulp *Rubber Gloves (the kind for cooking or hospital gloves work great) Variety of artist paint brushes (week 4) Mixing cups for paint (week 4) Optional: *Electronic kitchen scale with gram units (week 2) *Blender (optional, depending on paper source) (week 2) *Dough knife (optional, but very helpful) (week 2) Variety of sculpting tools, dental instruments (Skycraft), etc (week 3)
Sprague, Geoffry

Geoffry trained for a career in graphic design and in 1984 earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Graphic Design Emphasis from California State University, Fullerton. From 1981 to 2007 he worked as a graphic designer and freelance artist, and in 1991 received a Charlie Award for Best Magazine Redesign from the Florida Magazine Association. In April 2011 he was one of three artists featured in “Cutting Edges” at the Art League of Daytona Beach. In 2014 his sculpture “Morning Jo Jo” was included in Lark Ceramics publication 500 Figures in Clay, Volume 2.
