Explore the art of pouring transparent watercolors directly onto paper. This brushless-watercolor technique allows colors to mix on your paper creating unique luminous color and glow. Finish off your painting by fine-tuning the details. Have fun creating amazing pieces with a new watercolor skill.

  • Watercolor Paper – Full sheet of Arches 300 lb. cold press
  • Paint
  • Aureolin, rose madder or permanent rose, cobalt and ultramarine or permanent blue
  • “Almost empty” tubes of transparent paint (Save your empty tubes)
  • Your palette
  • Preferably with a large mixing area
  • Brushes
  • Your favorite brushes for direct painting
  • (Optional: #30 Goliath (Robert Simmons #789) My favorite brush!
  • ¾” or 1” flat brush)
  • Other Materials
  • Photos you have taken with emphasis on large shapes
  • Gator board, stapler, masking tape
  • Frisket (mask)
  • Pencil, eraser, spray bottle, soft sponge
  • Clear plastic cups to mix paints
  • Tissues or paper towels
  • Tub (example: under-the-bed bin) to catch runoff paint

Kane, Patty

Patty Kane's passion is painting with transparent watercolor using a limited palette. She says, "it is a process, which allows me to explore subject matter that inspires my creativity and passion for mixing colors". Patty has won many awards for her Florida-themed paintings, most recently The People's Choice Award at 1st Thursdays at Orlando Museum of Art and the "Lee Ackert" Award for Outstanding Color at Fort Myers Beach Art Association. She was granted "Art Educator of the Year" at the Center for the Arts of Bonita Springs in 2010 and received a "Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition" for Keeping Hope Alive Through Art at an exhibition in Winter Park, Florida.
