Explore the rich world of oil painting with a focus on landscapes. You will learn about the materials used in oil painting, their history, and how to apply a variety of techniques, including underpainting, glazing, and alla prima. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice, you will develop a deeper understanding of how these methods can bring depth, atmosphere, and life to your landscape paintings.
To help create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, we ask students to review and follow The Center's Policies and Procedures available on our website. Students who cannot comply with these guidelines may be asked to leave class, and refunds will not be issued in these cases.
- Suggested Supplies:

- Brushes – a variety (oil-based)
- Palette (kinds: wood or plastic)
- Palette knife
- Canvas or canvas board (size recommendation 11X 14 or 16 x 20 inches). We would recommend having 2 or 3 canvases to work on at the same time, possibly.
- Oil paints (possible brand names: Grumbacher, Winsor & Newton, Rembrandt, Van Gogh)
- Oil colors: cadmium red medium, cadmium yellow light, cobalt blue, titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt umber, burnt sienna

- Linseed oil (A small container)
- Galkyd (this is a kind of Liquin and dries quickly) - a small container
- Gamsol (Odorless mineral spirit)
Wes Sherman
Artist Wes Sherman has been painting since 1992 and has been included in hundreds of exhibitions across the county and Europe.. He received his MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2003. Sherman has been a visiting artist at many universities and the recipient of a fellowship for painting from New Jersey Council of the Arts. For the past 15 years Sherman has focused on landscape painting, in particular en plein air painting.
He is the chair of exhibitions at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, New Jersey.
